Aluminum picture frame origin
Aluminum picture frame handcrafted by Nguyễn Văn Đốc for his wife, Thuận.
Nguyễn Văn Đốc handmade this picture frame while at Suối Máu "re-education camp." He collected aluminum pieces from Thành Ông Năm camp, the first camp where he was interned. He then used tools made out of the scrap metal he had collected from Thành Ông Năm camp to cut and engrave this frame. On the front of the frame, along with the the couple's wedding photo, which is surrounded by found string he had woven together, Nguyễn Văn Đốc engraved a poem he composed for his wife, Thuận:
“Yêu Thương Nhớ Tràn Đầy
Làm món quà nho nhỏ
Trao người vợ trẻ trung trinh
Cả khối tình si cả ước mơ
Sống trọn cho nhau một kiếp người”
(Overflowing with love and yearning
I made a small gift
for the young, virtuous wife
All the love and dreams
Living a full life for each other).
On the other side, he engraved a proverb in Chinese characters, which renders into vernacular Vietnamese as the following:
“Nhẫn Hoà Phu Phụ Thành Gia Đạo”
(Patience and harmony between husband and wife make a family).
The metal stand is made up of the couple's initials (DT).
This frame was given to his wife during her visits to Suối Máu "re-education camp" in 1978.
