ARVN Gallantry Cross, Armed Forces Level Origin
Awarded to Lt. Col. Schungel for his bravery during the Battle of Hậu Đức (Quảng Ngãi Province, Feb. 6–7, 1968).
This Gallentry Cross medal was given to Lt. Col. Daniel F. Schungel for his bravery during the Battle of Hậu Đức (Quảng Ngãi Province, Feb. 6–7, 1968), where he commanded Special Forces C Company, 5th SFG (Airborne). This battle also earned him the U.S. Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star. The medal consists of a Celtic cross with two crossed swords superimposed over a wreath. At the center of the cross is a disc with the outline of the country of Vietnam between two palm branches and a scroll with the inscription "QUOC GIA LAO TUONG" (reward of the state). The palm on the ribbon indicates that it was awarded at the Armed Forces level. Lt. Col. Daniel F. Schungel later entrusted this medal to his adopted son, Dr./Mayor Trương Minh Ẩn.
Object donated to the Vietnamese Heritage Museum by Trương Minh Ẩn

Preserved as a record of South Vietnam’s alliance with the United States and later entrusted to his adopted son, Dr./Mayor Trương Minh Ẩn.
