This Chương Mỹ Merit Medal, 1st class was awarded by President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu to Lieutenant Colonel Daniel F. Schungel, U.S. Army Special Forces, in recognition of his service during the Vietnam War. It is in the shape of an X with a center disc with arms radiating out between the arms. Lt. Col. Daniel F. Schungel later entrusted this medal to his adopted son, Dr./Mayor Trương Minh Ẩn.
