Description
These military-grade binoculars were used by Đoàn Việt during his 1987 escape from Vietnam by sea on a fishing boat. Purchased for five taels of gold, they were a critical tool for navigation—used to spot land, avoid patrol boats, and monitor weather conditions from Vietnam to Singapore. Unlike civilian models, these binoculars offered long-range precision and durability, allowing Đoàn Việt and his fellow escapees to spot land, avoid Communist patrol boats, and steer through the dangerous waters of the South China Sea. Once aboard their small fishing boat—built for rivers, not open seas—the binoculars were essential for scanning the horizon, spotting dangers or possible help, and tracking weather changes.
