VHM_0037
This compact military compass was used by Đoàn Việt, a former officer of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces, during his 1987 boat escape from Vietnam to Singapore. Trained in land navigation, he used this compass to chart bearings and coordinate positions across the South China Sea on a small, river fishing boat. Unlike a basic compass that simply indicates direction, this "Compass để chấm tọa độ" allowed him to pinpoint latitude and longitude by working in conjunction with nautical charts (hải đồ) to track their exact position at sea. This compass proved especially vital during nighttime travel, guiding his group through darkness while helping them avoid detection by Communist patrol boats and pirates.
Object donated to the Vietnamese Heritage Museum by Đoàn Việt.
