These nautical calipers were sourced and used by Đoàn Việt, a former South Vietnamese officer, to navigate a small fishing boat carrying a group of refugees out of Vietnam in 1987. Assigned as the boat’s navigator (hoa tiêu), he used basic tools — a marine compass, hand-drawn nautical charts, and these calipers — to chart a course to Singapore. Because unauthorized travel was strictly prohibited under Communist rule, obtaining tools like these was both dangerous and extremely difficult—possession could lead to imprisonment or even execution. Đoàn Việt had to rely on black market networks and trusted contacts to acquire the calipers discreetly. After months of effort and considerable personal risk, he ultimately used these calipers to measure distances, plot bearings, and mark coordinates for navigating open waters.
