Description

This wooden clock, shaped like the map of Vietnam, was acquired before 1975 in Vietnam and brought to the United States. On their final night in Saigon, Kathy, her husband (a Malaysian doctor), and their two sons packed without sleep. Among the few belongings they carried was this wooden map of Vietnam. For Kathy Brown, who regularly checked the time, the clock was meant to be a constant and meaningful reminder of her homeland, ensuring that the memory of Vietnam remained present in her everyday life.

Tôi chấm bằng nước mắt, bằng máu trong tim… ghi lại cho hậu thế ngày tôi ly hương… và đến nay chưa có cơ hội trở về quê hương—

Ngày 14 tháng 4 năm 1975 tôi đang ở Sài Gòn. Chồng tôi, bác sĩ người Malaysia, trong một buổi điểm tâm cuối cùng đã chiên trứng gà “ốp la” và nói với tôi:
— Tròng đỏ là Việt Nam ở giữa.
— Tròng trắng là Việt Cộng vây quanh…
Chúng ta phải trở về Malaysia.

Gia đình tôi rời Việt Nam ngày 15/04/1975.
Ngày cuối, chúng tôi không ngủ, thu xếp vội vàng những gì cần thiết cho vợ chồng và hai con trai.

Sáng ra đi, tôi không hiểu sao nước mắt tôi không rơi, mà dường như tôi không còn biết mình là ai!!! Tôi nhìn quanh mái ấm gia đình lần cuối, vuốt bản đồ Việt Nam, chồng tôi thúc hối ra phi trường… Và tôi không biết tại sao tôi ôm vội bản đồ gỗ Việt Nam chạy ra xe…

Và bản đồ Việt Nam bằng gỗ đã tha phương trôi nổi cùng tôi mọi nơi, mọi lúc, mọi hoàn cảnh.

Và ngày hôm nay, tại sao tôi gởi cho viện bảo tàng?
— Tôi muốn gởi lại cho thế hệ sau máu và nước mắt của năm 1975.

I wrote with tears, with the blood of my heart… a record for future generations of the day I left my homeland… and to this day I have not had the chance to return—

On April 14, 1975, I was in Saigon. My husband, a Malaysian doctor, during our last breakfast fried sunny-side-up eggs (“ốp la”) and said to me:
— The yolk is Vietnam in the middle.
— The white is the Viet Cong surrounding it…
We must return to Malaysia.

My family left Vietnam on April 15, 1975.
On that final day, we did not sleep, hurriedly gathering what was essential for my husband, myself, and our two sons.

That morning, as we departed, I do not know why no tears fell— as though I no longer knew who I was. I looked around our home one last time, stroked the map of Vietnam, while my husband urged me to the airport… And I do not know why I suddenly clutched the wooden map of Vietnam and ran to the car…

And that wooden map of Vietnam has wandered with me everywhere, at all times, in every circumstance.

And today, why did I send it to the museum?
— I want to leave behind for future generations the blood and tears of 1975.
