To the United States, the frontier- The West- is not a real place. It is a metaphor for wherever the nation is built. At the turn of the 20th Century, the American frontier spanned the Pacific, uniting the majestic redwood forests of California and the lush jungles of the Philippines as places where American industry, machines, and attitudes shaped the land for the next one hundred years.
