Data Management Plans

Data management plans (DMPs) are becoming a common component in grant applications and increased importance to funders. Fortunately, UCLA is an affiliated institution for the California Digital Library’s DMPTool – a web application that walks you through the process of writing a DMP tailored to the specific requirements of both the funder and your institution.

DMPTool – sign in as an affiliate and then click Create Plan and select the appropriate granting agency and/or program. The interface will present prompts and space to flesh out each section of the DMP to ensure you are addressing all of the requirements. Additionally, the tool will provide links to policies, guides, and FAQs for that specific grant and allow you collaborate with members of your team.

Long-term preservation and ongoing access to the data you will collect is a key component of a DMP. UCLA recently launched an institutional repository that all faculty, staff, and students can deposit their research data in for long-term preservation and access, free of charge. Digital Archaeology Lab staff will help you plan collecting and processing procedures to facilitate use and reuse of your data, will work with you to prepare your data for preservation, and assist with getting it deposited.

Need to write a DMP? The Digital Archaeology Lab staff are well-versed in writing DMPs and happy to help you not only draft the plan but also identify relevant standards and practices to ensure your data are collected and documented in such a way as to facilitate use and access over time.
